Publisher's Message
Welcome to the sixth issue of On The Trail! The Inline Skating
Center will publish ten issues of the newsletter from now until
the end of October covering a wide range of topics about
inline skating on marked trails.
In today's issue, we're going to introduce a tactic you can use
when you need to skate up and over roadside curbs like a pro.
Curbs
Sometimes you may be skating on a road and you need to go
from the road to the sidewalk in a hurry. In this case, you
need to step up and over the curbing that runs between the
road and the sidewalk. Here's how!
To step up and over top of the curb from the road to the
sidewalk:
- Skate parallel with and to within six inches of the curb.
- Lift your right skate about one foot straight up in the air.
- Now shift your right skate out to your right side and over
top of the curb.
- After it clears the curb, set it back down on the sidewalk
about twelve inches on the other side of the curb.
- After your right skate touches the sidewalk, lift your left
skate quickly off the road and move it over top of the curb to
the sidewalk being careful to lift it high enough so as not to
clip the top of the curb.
- Set your left skate back down on the sidewalk in the home
position next to your right skate to steady yourself and to
return to a balanced position.
- Resume striding and gliding as before on the sidewalk.
Until Next Time
Some trails contain metal gates that act as safety barriers to
reduce the speed of cyclists and skaters when they approach
cross walks that are open to automobile traffic.
In the next issue, we'll look at a tip and tactic you can use to
skate around and through these gates with ease.
See you in a couple of weeks,
Jim
